Forest River Trails

Trail Improvements

In 2016 KZLA was hired as a consultant to the City of Salem to develop a report of existing trail conditions within the Forest River Conservation Area (FRCA). It was found that the trail surface conditions were greatly affected by erosion from foot traffic, poor drainage, and tripping hazards. In 2017 KZLA was hired to improve a highly used portion of the existing trail. The improved section of trail starts at the Salem State South Campus parking lot trailhead and extends 1/4 mile into the site. The trail runs parallel to an adjacent salt marsh and provides views overlooking Forest River. The improved trail creates a safe accessible recreational trail for all user types. The project also included stormwater management and erosion control devices to reduce the runoff water that could impact the longevity of the trail. All improvements were designed to have a minimal impact on the site and were intended to not disturb the natural features.
