Hammonasset Beach
Coastal Restoration
At Hammonasset State Park, KZLA developed a site design approach that redefines the site circulation, locates a new bathhouse outside of the coastal flooding and velocity zones, restores native vegetation and dunes, and locates a multi-use trail to connect park facilities. The new bathhouse is located several hundred feet back from Long Island Sound and is elevated nearly eight feet above existing grade to allow flooding from storms and anticipated sea level rise without damage to the facilities. The 1,000 car parking lot was re-configured with large rain gardens to manage stormwater and decrease the mass of pavement.
